Transport Business Breakfast

[ 26-08-2010 ]

Speakers

Professor John Nelson, Director of the Centre for Transport Research - University of Aberdeen

Derick Murray, Director - Nestran

Transport issues at local and national level are consistently of greater concern and irritation to members than any other issue affecting business in the North-east. Members of the Chamber want the AWPR to proceed without delay; want faster rail journey times to the central belt; want the Haudagain sorted out; and want the region to get its fair share of infrastructure investment.

In response, Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has committed to campaign on transport issues during 2010. The campaign will focus on transport at all levels and will seek action at local and national level. The transport campaign is the second of a series of Chamber campaigns, following the on-going work on Business Rates Revaluation.

We are holding this topical Business Breakfast featuring a panel of expert speakers from local and national level to discuss current issues and the way forward. Speakers will identify the priorities for the region, future challenges and consider how we can get things moving.

Derick Murray of Nestrans and member of the transport steering group will give an update on the progress of the campaign.

Professor John Nelson will also discuss the recent developments in Bus Rapid Transit:

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), characterized by modern vehicles, dedicated busway and applications of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies, is increasingly considered as a cost-effective approach of providing a high-quality transport service. Many cities across the world have recently launched ambitious programmes of BRT system implementation with varying success. This paper intends to provide an overview of the recent developments of BRT across the globe, and discuss the current issues and debates relating to the land development impact of BRT. It considers in turn the impact of BRT examining technical performance, cost issues and land development impact. The paper concludes that appropriately designed and operated BRT systems offer an innovative approach to providing a high-quality transport service, comparable to a rail service but at a relatively low cost and short implementation time. In common with other forms of Mass Transit, a full-featured BRT has the potential to offer significant effects on land development although more work is needed to investigate this.
