Healthy Working Lives Lunch & Learn

[ 03-09-2010 ]

Following the sucess of  our May event we are pleased to welcome back Healthy Working Lives to present at this event for a second time.

Small and medium emlpoyers across Scotland are to be supported to deal with mental health issues such as stress and anxiety in the workplace. Evidence shows that this area is a major concern for employers.

To help small businesses address any concerns around mental health and other workplace health issues, the Scottish Chambers of Commerce has joined forces with the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives (part of the NHS) to offer advice and support in this area. Organisations such as the Institute of Directors and the Federation of Small Businesses will also be involved.

The 18-month partnership will involve a package of information and a series of events for chambers members, focusing on the business benefits of good occupational health and offering advice on how to achieve this.

The campaign will communicate the importance of contacting the Adviceline early when workplace stress is an issue.

A healthier workforce is good for business. Evidence shows that healthier staff are more productive, calmer under pressure and less likely to be absent from work. In fact, work health promotion programmes can lead to a 34% drop in absenteeism and research suggests that every pound spent on health promotion could save businesses £2.50.

Free, confidential support is available from the The Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives to help businesses keep their staff healthy – call the Healthy working Lives Advice line on 0800 019 2211 or see http://www.healthyworkinglives.com/small-business-advice.aspx

There are also 80 locally based advisers across Scotland available to visit businesses and support them in promoting good health in the workplace. Free, confidential visits with your local adviser can be arranged by calling the advice line.

The partnership between the Scottish Chambers of Commerce and the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives will focus specifically on businesses with 250 or less employees, who are less likely to have the resources to dedicate to occupational health.

Summary of this session:

The business context to addressing workplace health issues and why it makes good business sense;

An overview of the strength and depth of free services provided by Healthy Working Lives;

There will be practical sets of examples from two Aberdeen SME businesses explaining why they took the HWL route and the benefits it delivered.
