SCC COMMENT ON THE NEW UK GOVERNMENT
[ 12-05-2010 ]
Commenting on the news of the emergence of a Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition as the Government of the United Kingdom, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:
“We congratulate both parties on reaching an agreement to govern Britain, but now it is time to get down to business. The overwhelming priority for the new Government must be to stabilise our economy and set us on the path back to strong growth. Urgent action is needed to address the budget deficit, and this will require tough but necessary decisions to be made by the new Prime Minister and his team.
“The Government must also deliver the right support to businesses to allow the private sector to lead us on to future prosperity. An early Budget from the new Chancellor must contain a commitment to scrap the planned rise in employers’ National Insurance Contributions, and a phased reduction in the burden of Corporation Tax for small and exporting businesses would help to give the UK a competitive advantage in the world marketplace and make Britain a genuinely attractive place to do business.
“For businesses in Scotland, it will be vital to ensure that the channels to politicians in Westminster remain open and welcoming. The good work done by Jim Murphy in building up relations between Scottish businesses and Westminster must be developed further by the new Scottish Secretary, and at a more fundamental level, politicians and civil servants in London and Edinburgh must work more closely together to achieve the best deal for Scotland’s economy.”
