IT'S TIME FOR A FAIR DEAL FOR SCOTTISH RETAILERS

[ 14-01-2011 ]

Lodging a written submission to the Scottish Parliament’s Local Government and Communities Committee today, Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) have called on MSPs to vote down Government plans to introduce a business rates supplement for large retailers in Scotland. Commenting, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of SCC, said:

“It is time to give Scotland’s retailers a fair deal on their business rates and axe this proposed new shop tax.  Scotland’s retail sector employs over a quarter of a million people, with more than two thirds of those workers employed by large businesses.  To impose a short notice tax of up to £320,000 plus on individual stores is damaging to these businesses and could threaten future investment decisions in Scotland.

“Let’s not pretend that this tax is all about out of town supermarkets.  This tax will hit large town and city centre shops as well, threatening Scotland’s reputation as a retail destination and having a knock on effect on many smaller businesses in the process.

“We are pleased that many of Scotland’s politicians have seen through this tax for the money raising exercise it really is.  It’s time to pull the plug on this ill-thought out scheme before it has a chance to hit our economy.  Scotland is emerging from the longest and deepest recession since the war.  It makes no economic sense whatsoever to apply an unfair tax on Scottish job and wealth creators at a time when we are looking to them to lead the way towards sustained growth.”
