SCC CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION TO ADDRESS CONNECTIVITY IN WAKE OF BMI AIR SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
[ 31-01-2011 ]
Reacting to the news that BMI are to suspend flights on their Glasgow-Heathrow route in March, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:
“This is extremely bad news for business in Scotland and will leave our largest city with just a single service provider to the UK’s key hub airport, reducing both connectivity and competition. It also threatens a significant number of high quality jobs in Scotland.
“It serves to underline the folly of the stance the UK Government has adopted in opposing further expansion at Heathrow Airport, since without the additional capacity, domestic routes are subject to further pressure from highly profitable international services.
“Scotland is extremely reliant on air transport for travel to and from London, with six million out of seven million passenger journeys each year being made by air. The priority now must be to secure genuine competition on travel between the west of Scotland and Heathrow and to accelerate Scotland’s connectivity by rail with London, particularly early inclusion in the UK’s High Speed Rail network.”
