IT’S TIME FOR A PROPORTIONATE APPROACH TO HEALTH AND SAFETY

[ 24-05-2011 ]

A new report published by the British Chambers of Commerce has called for a fairer, more proportionate approach to UK Health and Safety regulation.  Commenting, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

“Nobody would argue that businesses should be unregulated, and in the field of health and safety there is a genuine need to ensure that our working population receives appropriate support from Government in terms of a safe and secure working environment.

“However regulation must be proportionate to risk and it is clear that, for many businesses across Scotland and the rest of the UK, the burden has become out of proportion to the nature of trade. Proportionality is a one of the five principles of good regulation and where this has broken down, it is up to Government to put things right.

“That is why Chambers of Commerce across Britain have issued a challenge to the UK Government to develop a regulatory environment where health and safety regulation is tailored to needs of specific industries.  The one-size-fits-all approach is not working and is prejudicing job creation.”
