SCOTLAND’S ECONOMY MUST BE THE PRIORITY IRRESPECTIVE OF AIRPORT OWNERSHIP

[ 19-07-2011 ]

Commenting on the Competition Commission’s final ruling that BAA must sell either Glasgow or Edinburgh Airport, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

“Scottish Chambers of Commerce have consistently held the view that a change in the ownership of one of Scotland two largest airports will not in itself result in a better deal for Scottish air travellers.  To a large extent, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports serve distinct markets and this will not necessarily change if new owners take over the operation of one of these facilities.

“The priority now is to ensure that all of Scotland’s airports, irrespective of ownership, continue to benefit from planned investment.  Our air connectivity is vital for business and for our future economic prosperity.  We remain unconvinced that the current ownership model is broken, but our focus must always be on the future.”
