SCC COMMENT ON SCOTTISH UNEMPLOYMENT
[ 14-09-2011 ]
Commenting on the news that Scottish unemployment has fallen by 3,000 in the three months to July, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:
“It is good news for Scotland that our unemployment levels are now back on a downward path and that the Scottish rate of unemployment is now significantly below the UK average. Despite the fact that the claimant count has been on an upward trend for four months now, the fact that the overall rate of employment is rising seems to indicate that many people who have lost their jobs may be getting back into employment relatively quickly.
“The Scottish Government has published its revised economic strategy, which seeks to hardwire increasing growth and employment trends into our economy. As Governments north and south of the border prepare their budgets for the coming years, it is vital that the finite public purse is focused even more strongly on enabling the private sector to succeed, grow and create new jobs. In Scotland, we have a unique opportunity to restore the balance of our economy back in favour of the private sector and Government policy must be directed towards this end. That way, businesses can continue to create new, sustainable jobs, giving everyone a stake in our future success.”
