SCC CALLS FOR COMMITMENT TO SCOTTISH AIR ROUTES
[ 30-03-2012 ]
Commenting on the decision by the European Commission to conditionally approve the acquisition of bmi by the IAG Group, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:
“It is welcome that this deal contains a commitment to secure a number of key slots at Heathrow for domestic use and that a commitment has been given to carry connecting passengers of competitor long haul carriers, but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating and the sharing of seven Heathrow slot pairs between Aberdeen and Edinburgh seems rather meagre.
“It is clear that British Airways will dominate the cross border domestic air market between Scotland and Heathrow Airport and access to the UK’s major hub airport remains vital to Scotland’s future competitiveness. This is particularly true for Aberdeen Airport where the railways are not as competitive with air travel as they are in Scotland’s central belt.
“We will continue to engage in dialogue with British Airways to ensure that Scotland remains a major priority for the airline and we are seeking a commitment that the needs of business and leisure travellers flying to and from Scotland will be high on their agenda.”
