SCC COMMENT ON MANUFACTURING FIGURES
[ 24-10-2012 ]
Commenting on the publication of figures which reveal that Scotland’s manufactured exports fell by 4% in the second quarter of 2012, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:
“These latest official figures for Scotland’s manufactured exports paint a disappointing, if not unexpected, picture. The three months between April and June this year marked a time of extreme uncertainty in the Eurozone, which contains many of Scotland’s key export markets, and we also saw the strengthening of sterling, which could have affected the price competitiveness of some goods.
“With demand at home remaining constrained and export markets weakening, it is unsurprising that our own surveys revealed disappointing levels of confidence among Scottish manufacturers over the summer. That said, the resilience evident in our manufacturing sector throughout the past five years has been remarkable and Scottish businesses have the capacity to succeed. As firms look towards the wider international marketplace and with the support of Governments at home taking action to stimulate demand, there remains a promising future ahead for manufacturing in Scotland.”
