SCC COMMENT ON BAE SYSTEMS RESTRUCTURING

[ 06-11-2013 ]

Commenting on the news that BAE Systems is to cut 1,775 jobs across five of its facilities, including Govan, Scotstoun and Rosyth in Scotland, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

“Any announcement of job loss on this scale will obviously impact communities, families and the wider economy, both in Scotland and at Portsmouth.

“However, we have a highly skilled workforce in these yards and all efforts must be directed towards finding alternative opportunities for those who are facing the prospect of redundancy over the next three years.

“This has been a business decision made by BAE Systems and it should be viewed as such, despite the inevitable political debate that will surround the circumstances of the decision.  Our politicians should be working together to support the workforce and the business to move forward in what is a highly competitive, world-wide market.  Although the loss of jobs is of a very significant scale, it is clear that BAE Systems foresee an important future for shipbuilding in Glasgow and we must all work towards securing the maximum possible economic benefit for Scotland.”
