CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE NETWORK SETS OUT CASE FOR INCREASED POWERS TO SCOTLAND

[ 05-11-2014 ]

Scottish Chambers of Commerce, Scotland’s leading voice providing business insight and economic intelligence, sets out a clear, business case for increased powers to Scotland.

On submitting the Chambers of Commerce response to Lord Smith’s Commission, Liz Cameron, Director/Chief Executive said,

“On 18th September 2014, the people of Scotland took a democratic decision to remain part of the United Kingdom.

“Our submission to Lord Smith reflects the mood of business in Scotland: we are hungry for growth and confident about the future.  Scottish businesses, particularly small and medium sized businesses, are the growth drivers of the economy, so Governments must utilise tax powers and policies more creatively to encourage further expansion and increase employment.

“Our plans today set out the recommendations which we see as key to driving business growth in Scotland: reforms and further devolved taxes to the Scottish Parliament and transformations in existing business policies.

“This is the message from our business members from up and down Scotland from the Borders to Inverness and to Glasgow. Our passion is to make business great for Scotland and we are clear that further devolved powers are paramount to provide Scotland with the tools needed to boost economic growth, increase our international exports and create jobs.

“Politicians must take this opportunity to ensure that the devolved settlement for Scotland is considered and appropriate.  It is more important to get it right than to do it quickly.  For our members, any changes to the devolved settlement must deliver a benefit to business and our economy.”
