Being one of Europe’s leading international cities in terms of GDP, Milan is the economic capital of Italy. It drives opportunities in a variety of industries, including financial and banking services, design and fashion, engineering, energy and renewables, as well as agri-food and drink. Around 3,600 multinational companies operate with their base in Milan, having identified it as a city increasing in innovation and economic growth. The city is served by three international airports and is in a central location in Northern Italy. This allows easy access for businesses both exporting within the EU, as well as globally.

The Piemonte Region around Torino (Turin) is considered to be a gateway to both Europe and the world, with its highly accessible transport links and networks via road, rail and air. It is a promising and competitive region for business and plays a vital role in the Italian economy. Although traditionally Piemonte was the heart of Italian manufacturing and the automotive industry, it now boasts opportunities in a diverse range of sectors.

In September 2020, Milan was supposed to be hosting a series of youth and pre-cop events in the lead up to COP26 taking place in Glasgow in November. As a result of the current situation regarding COVID19, COP26 has been rescheduled to November 2021 and therefore Milan will see these events take place instead at the end of September and beginning of October 2021. The Italian Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with Connect4Climate – World Bank Group and the Office of Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, however, has launched an ambitious program of virtual and interactive meetings addressed to young people around the world in order to highlight the important role of youth in climate change action in view of COP26.

As well as the importance of youth, however, it is crucial that businesses of all sizes and across all sectors are aware of their environmental impact and strives to look for more sustainable ways of working for the future. Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the British Chamber of Commerce Italy, will be hosting a delegation of Scottish companies for a virtual trade mission to the cities of Milan and Turin from the 20th-21st of October. The mission will focus on sustainability, circularity and the green economy and aims to attract Scottish companies across all sectors that are looking to export and have a strong interest within these areas.
