As the old saying goes “alcohol, because no great challenge ever starts with someone eating a salad”. The idea of swimming the North Channel arose when our speaker Rachel had just completed a 5 km swim alongside her mother and was celebrating with rosé wine. Fast forward 8 months later, Rachel and her mother had become the first ever 2 person relay team to swim the North Channel, the 21 mile stretch of water between Northern Ireland and Scotland. The North Channel is deemed as the hardest channel to swim in the world due to the cold (14°C is the maximum temperature), strong tides and abundance of jellyfish. Moreover, no wetsuits are allowed!
Rachel and her mother completed the North Channel in just over 16 hours and then followed up with swimming the English Channel, England to France, a mere 6 weeks later. This meant that they were first ever relay team to complete 2 channels in 2 months and raised over £20,000 for Maggie’s Centre.
