Welcoming news on the composition of the Scottish Government’s next Cabinet, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

“Alex Salmond has made much of the talents within his Cabinet, and we welcome the fact that the experience developed across the last four years of government has been preserved in the composition of the new Government.  From a business point of view, we welcome in particular the re-appointment of John Swinney as Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth – he has demonstrated a comprehensive command of his brief and has a track record of understanding the balance of economic and political issues.
“The question will be how well his role can dovetail with that of Alex Neil’s newly created role as Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment.  Alex will be taking on much of Jim Mather’s previous responsibilities here in addition to housing and regeneration.  There is no doubt that economic issues are well represented in Cabinet, but these two men will need to work cheek by jowl to deliver the right conditions for business growth.
“With a reducing infrastructure budget over coming years, the Government needs to be creative in delivering the projects Scotland needs to get moving again, starting with the new Forth Bridge.  We wish the new Cabinet well in their work and Scottish Chambers of Commerce will work with them to deliver what is necessary for Scotland.”
