SCC Comment on COVID-19
“It is likely that the spread of the virus will harm business and consumer confidence, as well as the day-to-day operation of our business communities. There is also the potential risk it could pose to supply chains that Scottish businesses depend on. However, it is still too early to say whether or not it will result in a recession. The impact of the virus will not be uniform and will vary from sector to sector. But we have started to hear from businesses having cash flow problems, concern over childcare, supply chain concerns and general concern over their workforces being off sick for extended periods of time.
“We would urge business, employers and employees to be cautious and keep themselves regularly up-to-date on the latest advice and guidelines issued by government and the NHS. As a priority, employers should consider reviewing their working practises and insurances so that they are in line with these as they are updated and so they can keep doing business where possible.
“It is likely confirmed cases will grow in the coming weeks. We would advise anyone who believes they have the symptoms should stay at home and contact NHS24 or their GP. Businesses should be open to flexible working and develop contingency plans in accordance with official guidance, to help mitigate any risks to their operations and supply chains.

“We call upon the UK Government to implement practical measures in the UK Budget that can quickly support businesses impacted by the effects of the coronavirus, for example delaying or reducing payments on VAT to assist SME’s with cash flow and opening up public procurement contract opportunities.”
