SCC Comment on UK GDP statistics – Q4 2019

11-02-2020

Commenting on UK GDP statistics for Q4 2019, published today by the ONS, Dr Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC), said:

“These figures show that economic growth in the most recent quarter and the full year remained in the doldrums.

“All our research has shown this will be the likely trend in Scotland’s economy, too, which has shown slower growth relative to the rest of the country.

“Despite breaking the Brexit deadlock in Westminster, a faltering global economy and a challenging domestic business environment could continue to limit our growth prospects – particularly if the lack of clarity over post-transition trading arrangements persists. Our businesses need much more certainty over future trading arrangements.

“The upcoming budget must take swift and tangible steps to boost growth, productivity and confidence across the whole of the UK, including incentives to release investment and easing upfront business costs.”
