The Scottish Chambers of Commerce is calling on the UK Government to maintain momentum and accelerate the rollout of broadband infrastructure across Scotland, particularly in rural, remote, and island communities.

Earlier this year, the UK Government announced plans to improve broadband access for around 65,000 homes and businesses in hard-to-reach locations. While this was a welcome step forward, the pace of delivery remains a concern for many Scottish businesses.

Dr Liz Cameron CBE, Chief Executive of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce said:

“Businesses and communities in Scotland’s most remote areas will have welcomed the UK Government’s action taken earlier this year to improve broadband access for around 65,000 homes and businesses in hard-to-reach locations.

“However, delivery will not come overnight, and Scotland remains disproportionately affected by poor connectivity. Too many businesses in rural, remote, and coastal areas – especially on our islands – are still held back by sub-par digital access. The Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands, in particular, continue to be hamstrung by poorer broadband than is available elsewhere in the UK.

“Access to fast and reliable internet is essential for Scotland’s businesses to compete, innovate, and grow. While recent steps to improve connectivity are welcome, businesses need to see Government maintain their momentum and accelerate rollout. Scotland needs urgent action to deliver the coverage and speeds that businesses require to thrive.”
